Bedroom light is judged on how it behaves at night, not on how bright it can get. A warm, dimmable light in the evening sits more comfortably before sleep than a cool white one at full output, which is why so many of the fittings here either dim or shift colour.
The arrangement most bedrooms end up with is three parts. A soft ceiling light for the room as a whole. A bedside lamp or wall light on each side for reading, switched where you can reach it lying down. And something low for the walk to the door at night that does not wake the room up. This collection gathers fittings for all three.
What's in this range
There are 33 products in this collection, priced from 40 to 300 AUD. Heights run from 2.4 cm for step and strip fittings up to 180 cm for a standing lamp, and diameters run from 6.5 cm to 40 cm. The recorded wattages run from 0.5 W on the smallest night lights to 48 W on a full ceiling fitting.
Integrated LED is the most common source, recorded on seven products, with LED bulbs included on several more. Where a socket is listed it is E27 or G9. Materials include ABS, ABS with PVC, aluminium with silicone, and natural crystal salt on one night light. Mounting covers surface mounted ceiling fittings, wall mounted lights and wireless wall mounted models that need no wiring at all. Power is mains AC, listed on some products as a wide 90 to 260 V range, plus plug in and USB rechargeable options. Colour temperature is stated as warm, neutral and cool white on several fittings, with a 2700K to 6500K tri colour setting and a tunable warm to cool option among them. Of the products that record dimming, seven are listed as not dimmable and three as dimmable, and several more offer touch dimming or brightness adjustment on the fitting itself.
How to choose
Warm light for the last hour of the day
Pick the warmest setting you are willing to live with for anything used late in the evening. Fittings with a switchable colour temperature let you run a neutral white while getting dressed and a warm one before bed, which is the simplest way to get both out of one light. The settings offered are on each product page.
A bedside light that does not need an electrician
A wall mounted bedside light frees the whole surface of the bedside table, but it usually means wiring. The rechargeable wall lights in this range mount without wiring and charge by USB, so they work in a rental and can be moved or taken with you. The rechargeable lamps range lists the charging method on each product.
Where the switch sits matters more than you expect
A bedside light you have to get up to switch off is a bad bedside light. Touch control on the base or the body, and remote control on a ceiling fitting, both solve this. Several products here list touch dimming, which gives you the switch and the brightness in the same gesture.
Something low for the middle of the night
A small light near the floor lets you cross the room without turning on the ceiling. Motion sensor step lights and plug in night lights both do this, and the rechargeable versions need no power point at floor level. See the night lights range for the soft options and the step lights range for the ones that mount low on a wall.
The ceiling light still has to do its job
Soft does not mean weak. The ceiling fitting has to light the whole room when you are cleaning or looking for something, so size it for the room and use dimming or a warmer setting to bring it down in the evening rather than buying a fitting that is too small from the start.
Frequently asked questions
What colour light is best in a bedroom?
Warm white for the evening. Several fittings here offer warm, neutral and cool settings on one product, which covers both the evening and the times you need to see clearly. The Kelvin values available are listed on each product page.
Can I put a light beside the bed without wiring?
Yes. The wireless and rechargeable wall lights in this range mount to the wall and charge by USB, so no electrical work is needed. Plug in table lamps are the other option where there is a power point near the bed.
What is a good light for getting up at night?
Something low, warm and small. A motion sensor step light or a night light near the floor gives enough to walk by without lighting the whole room or waking anyone else. Rechargeable versions avoid needing a power point where you want the light.
Are bulbs included?
It depends on the product. Many fittings here have the LED built in, so there is no bulb at all. Where a socket is listed, the product page states whether a bulb comes with it. If you also want a bedside table lamp rather than a wall light, the table lamps range lists the same detail.
